Preparing for your first session

A few thoughts on what to expect from a first meeting with a psychologist, and how to feel a little more at ease beforehand.

Deciding to see a psychologist often comes after a long time of wondering whether you should. It's normal to feel nervous, unsure, or even tempted to cancel before a first session. Here are a few things that might help.

You don't need to know where to begin

Many people worry they won't find the right words. A first session isn't a test. You can start with "I'm not quite sure how to explain this" — that's a perfectly good beginning. It's the psychologist's job to help you make sense of your experience, not to expect a polished story.

What happens in a first session

A first session is usually a chance to meet. You'll talk about what brings you, how you've been feeling lately, and what you'd like to change. You'll also have the chance to ask questions — about the approach, how often to meet, and confidentiality.

It's worth asking yourself afterwards: do I feel I could speak openly with this person? Trust matters in therapy, and it's completely fine if the fit isn't right first time.

A few practical steps

  • If the session is online, check your connection and find a quiet spot where you won't be interrupted.
  • You might jot down a few thoughts or questions beforehand. It isn't necessary, but some people find it calming.
  • Give yourself a little time afterwards instead of rushing straight back to your to-do list.

One last thing

Deciding to look for support is already a step. You don't have to be "bad enough" to deserve time and attention for yourself.
